Boston, MA - The new kids in beantown, the Boston Whalers, opened their new arena, The Aquarium, with a victory in their first-ever home game, skating away with a scrappy 4-1 win over the McGregor Condors.  The Condors swooped in on the hometown Whalers quickly, putting 21 shots on goal in the first period and putting Boston goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury to the test early, but it was the Whalers who would strike first on the power play when Sergei Kostitsyn deflected a Wisniewski wrist shot past a sprawling Bryzgalov seven minutes into the opening period.  After withstanding McGregor’s initial onslaught, the Whalers seemed to gain confidence when Korpikoski fired the pill past Bryzgalov again at the thirteen minute mark to put Boston up 2-0.  With a raucous hometown crowd rocking the arena, the Whalers struck again with the man advantage five minutes later when new addition Jeff Skinner one-timed a Dubinsky pass into the back of the net to increase the lead to 3-0 at the end of the first period.

The Condors had a great opportunity early in the second period after Stastny drew a penalty with 6 seconds remaining in the first, giving them a 5-on-3 advantage for the first minute of the stanza.  Fleury came up big to keep the Whalers in the game, but Stastny fumbled the puck when he returned to the ice and Kopitar found the back of the net on a breakaway to make it 3-1 Boston.  The Condors lost a bit of their momentum, however, when Ohlund was called for high sticking mid-way through the period and Sobotka dug one out of the corner and fed Pahlsson for the Whalers’ third power play goal of the game and a 4-1 lead.

The Condors had another 5-on-3 opportunity early in the third period, when Brandon Dubinsky received a game misconduct at the end of the previous period and Sobotka was called for tripping, but once again Fleury came up huge to eventually preserve the win, as there was no scoring in a close-checking final period.

Fleury deservedly took 1st star honors.

  1. Howdy! I realize this is sort of off-topic but I needed to ask. Does building a well-established website like yours require a lot of work? I am completely new to blogging however I do write in my diary daily. I’d like to start a blog so I can share my own experience and thoughts online. Please let me know if you have any recommendations or tips for new aspiring blog owners. Appreciate it!

  2. Hi Sport,
Thank you for the kind comments. I has taken me awhile to get the webpage page blog going. Yes, it does take a bit of work. The FHL is starting a mini blog for each team so you will be able to Blog soon on the FHL Website for your team. That is part of the FHL Living Experience.
I am using Word Press to do the Blog. I would recommend the book “Word Press for Dummies 3rd Edition.” There are other programs like Drupal you may want to reseach depending on what your needs are.
    Who is this again?
    Jess
